Micellar Casein is a dairy protein derived from cows milk and accounts for approximately 80% of the protein found within milk, the remainder is whey protein. The term micellar refers to the fact that these proteins naturally aggregate into “micelles” when in a watery medium. Micellar Casein is casein that exists in its natural globular structure (known as a micelle). The group of milk proteins we generally call casein are comprised of alpha casein, beta casein, gamma casein, delta casein, and kappa casein. A casein micelle is composed of all five of the alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and kappa caseins. If one removes, or modifies, any one of the five caseins, the casein micelle is destroyed. Other Caseins and/or caseinates have been exposed to acid and alkali processes during their production in order to make them more palatable for use in food. As a result of these harsh processes they have a lower level of bioactivity due to the natural micellar structure of the casein being irreparably destroyed and the protein denatured/damaged.
Micellar Casein is a very high biological value protein that forms clumps when it enters the stomach, and hence is very slow digesting. This results in a slower release of amino acids into the body, which is beneficial for periods in which food is no longer being consumed. It has been shown that four hours after ingestion of whey protein, branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) are no longer being supplied to the body, while Micellar Casein was still able to supply BCAAs at this time. Furthermore significantly higher concentrations of leucine (a BCAA) can be found in circulation seven hours after consuming Micellar Casein compared to whey protein.

Micellar Casein is a naturally occurring substance in milk, and is consumed in large amounts by many people. It is safe to eat casein and most people do not experience side effects. However, if you are lactose intolerant, it is important to note that there may be significant levels of lactose present in products containing casein. Likewise, if you have a milk allergy or intolerance, Micellar Casein may not be appropriate for you. One downside to Micellar Casein is that because it is so slowly absorbed, it is not ideal to use it as a post workout supplement. The absorption of Micellar Casein is much slower than that of whey protein. Micellar Casein is not the ideal protein for as a post workout supplement. However, it can be used throughout the day to provide a steady supply of protein. Micellar Casein is also the ideal protein to use before bed to help maintain anabolism through the night.
Anybody seeking to retain or increase lean muscle mass should use Micellar Casein. Individuals on low calorie diets would also do well to use Micellar Casein as it helps maintain satiety (feelings of fullness) for longer periods of time than whey or soy protein. Add a serve of Micellar Casein to either water or milk in a shaker cup. Alternatively, Micellar Casein can be added to an existing whey protein blend for the purpose of extending its amino acid release rate.
Recommended intake times of Micellar Casein would be every 6 to 7 hours throughout the day and prior to bed at night. It is not recommended that Micellar Casein be ingested in place of a rapid acting Whey Protein within the first 1-2 hours after resistance training.
